Ah, 8:30’s. Some people love ‘em (me), some people hate ‘em (Heather). But I think we can all agree that getting up in the mornings can be rough (even for us morning people). No one enjoys waking up and having to start their day by frantically running around just to make it to class on time. No one wants to wear last night’s makeup to their morning seminar, or sit in class with an empty stomach consumed by the thought of breakfast (mmm bacon).

To help all of you out, I, an expert at waking up early, have created my morning checklist for guaranteeing you have a fantastic day whether you have an 8:30 or not. I’ve found that a few extra minutes to get ready in the morning makes all the difference in my mood/productivity/ overall happiness for the rest of the day. So, set that alarm clock 30 minutes earlier than usual, get some rest, and let’s get this bread (or bagel, or waffle, or pancakes)!
Tip #1: Make your bed
Yes, it really is that simple. After years of your mother telling you the same thing, I’m here to remind you that it’s important to make your bed once you get out of it. Why? Not only will it make you feel accomplished as heck, it’ll also stop you from crawling back into bed later on in the day. Your room will look tidier and feel cleaner, so you’ll feel better too.
Tip #2: Move your body
I’m not saying you need to get in a full-blown workout before heading to class bright and early, but you should do something to get your blood pumping. I usually just do a couple of stretches for about five minutes but it makes all the difference in the world and helps me feel awake. Kudos to you if you can do a full workout before a morning class, but for the rest of us… just… do something. Your body will thank you later.
Tip #3: Get wet
Like in the shower or something, sicko. Even if you’re not a morning-shower person, it’s worth splashing your face with some water so you feel clean and refreshed. It’s also good for your skin too! While you’re in the bathroom, don’t forget to brush your teeth because nothing, I mean nothing, is worse than morning breath.
Tip #4: Eat breakfast
At the expense of sound like your mom again, I’m here to remind you (again) that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives you energy to start your day, it makes you feel less hungry throughout the day, and it ensure that your stomach doesn’t grumble during your class. No need for this to a be five-star, four-course meal. A piece of toast or even a smoothie will do. My go-to? Matcha overnight oats (click here for the recipe).
Tip #5: Start a To-Do List
Once you feel kinda, sorta awake, do a brain dump. Write down whatever is on your mind: a to-do list, a bright invention idea, a script when your crush inevitably sits next to you in class, or whatever else you might be thinking about at this early hour. Doing this will de-clutter your thoughts and help you focus on the important things all day long.
Tip #6: Spoil Yourself
Do at least one thing that make you really happy before you head off to your class. Whether that’s listening to your favourite podcast, or perfecting your hair style, I highly encourage doing a little something for yourself each morning. For me, I like to make myself a cup of tea and catch up on current events (do I sound eighty years old yet?) and/or play some mood lifting music. Whatever it is that puts a smile on your face, make some time for it and do it!
Now you're ready to take on your day. Ladies, your makeup has never looked better. Fellas, your 'fit is giving Harry Styles a run for his money. Without an under-eye bag in sight, you feel well-rested, prepared, and refreshed. For once you're not starving to death so you can actually focus in class. Even more importantly, you feel your best because you look so damn good and you finally muster up the confidence to strike up a conversation with your crush with that script you wrote earlier. Is this do-able? Yes! So, get your butt out of bed 30 minutes earlier, follow these tips, and be prepared to make the impossible possible.
Full stomach, bright eyes, can't lose.
