Let’s be honest, you’re all probably wondering why this blog is called Pour Some Matcha On Me. What even is matcha? Why are we (and the rest of the world) so obsessed with it? What can you do with it? We’re about to answer all those questions here and give you Mariana’s go-to breakfast recipe: Matcha Overnight Oats.

To put it simply, matcha is literally just powdered green tea leaves. Unlike regular tea, where leaves are infused into hot water and then discarded, matcha is dissolved into hot water and the leaves are consumed. Traditionally, matcha tea is served as a hot, frothy drink for ceremonial reasons. There’s even a Japanese ceremony dedicated to the preparation of it!
However, these days it's all the rage. It can be found in a wide range of drinks (think everything from lattes to bubble teas), and food (especially desserts like ice cream or cake). Every other coffee shop (including Starbucks) has introduced it to their menu, and you can even find trendy cafes completely dedicated to it (Cha Cha Matcha, we see you).
So, what’s the big deal with matcha anyways?
It’s really really really good for you! Since the tea leaves are consumed, it’s like having the benefits of regular steeped green tea x 100. This means its packed with antioxidants which defend your body from aging, chronic diseases, and even, cancer. Green tea contains a unique antioxidant called catechins, which counteract cell damage caused by everyday pollution, radiation, and chemicals.
While we’re both all about body positivity, it doesn’t hurt to know that matcha also supports weight loss! If you look at the ingredients in weight loss supplements, you’ll most likely find “green tree extracts”. This is because it boosts metabolism and burns fat! It can also make you feel full longer and prevents overeating due to its blood glucose balancing effects.
Finally, it’s a healthy alternative to coffee! It contains more caffeine than steeped teas and doesn’t give you the jitters due to l-theanine, an amino the induces relaxation without drowsiness. L-theanine also improves focus and memory; therefore, making matcha the perfect study date drink.
Ok so you’re convinced now. The obsession with matcha is fully justified and very real. And you want in on the action.
Now, matcha has a very unique taste. It’s very ~green~. To be completely honest, I don’t even like traditional matcha tea (matcha lattes only, please). But I have found the perfect way to incorporate this superfood into my everyday breakfast.
If you ask me what my healthiest habit is, it’s waking up early. Early mornings are my best friend but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m awake enough to make a decent breakfast. I’m also usually running late to class. My solution? Overnight oats. All you have to do is make them the night before (or make a big batch on the weekend) and then voila! It’s ready in the morning. Even better? It’s super healthy and customizable. Even better than better? You can add matcha to it.
